To prepare a tooth to receive a dental crown, our dentists will remove a small amount of tooth enamel. This will allow room for the dental crown in your smile. Impressions of the tooth and those above or below will be made so that a dental crown can be custom made. Our office is metal-free, and only provides teeth crowns made of porcelain to ensure natural results. Porcelain mimics the translucency and appearance of tooth enamel to produce beautiful and long-lasting results. When making your crown, our dentists will use a shade guide to select a color of porcelain that will match your natural teeth. When the dental crown is complete, our dentists will permanently cement it in place.

What is a dental crown?
Teeth crowns, also known as dental caps or tooth caps, are custom-made restorations the cover the entire visible portion of your teeth to restore their shape, size, strength and appearance. They are designed to fit your smile and provide you with long-lasting, natural results.
Why would I need a dental crown?
Porcelain dental crowns are recommended to:
- Protect teeth weakened by decay or fracturing
- Restore broken or worn down teeth
- Cover and support teeth with large fillings
- Hold a dental bridge in place
- Cover a dental implant
- Cover misshapen or severely stained teeth
What steps are involved in preparing a tooth for a crown?
When you receive a crown, our dentists will begin by examining the tooth. We may take X-rays to check the roots of the tooth receiving the crown and surrounding bone. When we begin making your crown, we will start by taking an impression of the tooth. The tooth and surrounding gums will be numbed, and the tooth will be filed down along the chewing surface and cleaned in preparation for the impression. Our office uses CEREC technology, so creating the impression will be quick and simple. This digital impression will then be used to create a custom crown for your tooth. The crown will then be manufactured on the spot and permanently cemented in place. Your crown will be made from porcelain that matches the natural coloring of your other teeth.
How long do porcelain dental crowns last?
On average, a dental crown should last between five and 15 years. The lifespan of your crown depends on its exposure to wear and tear, your oral hygiene habits, and personal mouth-related habits (grinding and clenching the teeth, chewing ice, biting your fingernails, opening packaging with your teeth etc. These and other similar habits will reduce the lifespan of your crown).
Does a tooth with a crown need special care?
Teeth with crowns do not require special care. You do, however, need to continue following good oral hygiene practices, including brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily. This is especially important around the crown area where the gum meets the tooth. Good oral hygiene will help prevent decay and gum disease from causing further damage to the crowned tooth.
